The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are getting Qi2 wireless charging soon
by Viraj Gawde · Android HeadlinesMost of Apple’s modern iPhones support up to 15W wireless charging, but that’s only through the company’s proprietary MagSafe chargers. Using Qi-certified chargers will only get these phones up to 7.5W charging.
This is much slower and takes about double the time to charge the phones compared to Apple’s proprietary charger. The latest iOS 17.2 update will bring Qi2 wireless charging for iPhone 13 and 14 series owners.
The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series to get Qi2 charging support
Qi2 is the latest generation wireless charging standard from the Wireless Power Consortium. The iPhone 15 is the first phone to adopt this standard. This technology will push wireless charging forward into the future.
We saw Qi2 earlier this year at CES. It can output power wirelessly at 15W speed. Apple’s iPhone 15 family is the only one available in the market to support this latest generation wireless charging standard. The Cupertino-based tech giant will expand support for Qi2 charging to its older iPhones.
Apple has started pushing iOS 17.2 to beta testers recently. The changelog mentions that the update brings support for the Qi2 wireless charging standard to iPhone 13 and iPhone 14-series. This indicates that the older models will indeed be compatible with the latest generation wireless charging standard. An iOS RC is pushed before the release of the stable version. Thus, we can expect a rollout in the coming days.
The support for Qi2 wireless charging is good news for iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 owners as they had to shell out on the expensive Apple MagSafe for faster 15W wireless charging. Qi-compatible chargers were not very beneficial as the speed was limited to only 7.5W.
Qi2 has MagSafe-like ring magnets and hence can offer MagSafe speed without costing an arm and a leg like MagSafe chargers straight from Apple. Additionally, the new standard also promises better power efficiency. However, it remains to be seen if the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series will exactly charge at 15W on Qi2.
As of now, there are only a few Qi2 chargers available on the market from brands like Anker, Belkin, and Mophie. Anker’s spokesperson in a statement to bring Qi2 wireless charging revealed that their new MagGo products can support 15W wireless charging.
