In a candid interview with Time magazine, Taylor Swift has opened up about the devastating impact of the infamous phone call with Kanye West, which leaked online in 2016. The call, which was illegally recorded and edited, sparked a public firestorm and had a profound effect on Swift’s mental health and career.
Back then, Kim Kardashian allegedly edited snippets of the conversation and painted Taylor as approving the offensive lyrics of “Famous,” – “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous,” a claim Swift vehemently denied. Years later, the release of the full recording confirmed Taylor’s truth, exposing the manipulated narrative
“You have a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar,” Swift told Time. “That took me down psychologically to a place I’ve never been before.”
The leaked conversation, which centered on West’s song “Famous,” misrepresented Swift’s approval of the lyrics, which contained a derogatory reference to her. The backlash against Swift was swift and intense, leading to online harassment and a decline in her public image.
“I moved to a foreign country,” Swift revealed. “I didn’t leave a rental house for a year. I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore. I went down really, really hard.”
It took time and effort for Swift to recover from the ordeal. She spoke about the importance of seeking professional help and finding supportive relationships. “I knew I needed to get healthy,” she said. “I needed to re-learn how to trust people and how to be happy again.”
Now, years later, Swift is stronger than ever. She has released critically acclaimed albums, broken records, and built a loyal following. But the scars of the Kanye West incident remain.
“It was a very, very low point in my life,” Swift admitted. “But I learned a lot from it. I learned that I need to be more careful about the people I trust. And I learned that I need to be strong enough to stand up for myself.”
