Rockley sampling Bioptx Biosensing Band wearable with multiband spectrophotometer to monitor health conditions and biomarkers

Rockley is sending samples of the Bioptx Biosensing Band to select customers. This wearable improves how the light is projected and sensed on the body versus consumer smartwatches. The Bioptx is able to project light deeper into the skin to monitor health.

Consumer smartwatches (such as this on Amazon) use broad spectrum LEDs that shine light on the skin to sense heart beats and such. These watches do not sense reflected light within a narrow enough band to measure certain characteristics well. The Bioptx Bands uses narrow, multiband LEDs and spectrophotometer sensors to measure under the skin where current watches cannot.

The Bioptx looks inside the body in novel ways. For example, consumers currently use oral, forehead, or contactless thermometers to measure temperature. Rockley has developed a new method based on water absorption of light in tissues. This can tackle the inability of current thermometers to measure continuously throughout the day or to compensate for skin surface warming and cooling due to weather.

The 1.76 ounce Bioptx measures 1.79 x 1.63 x 0.59 inches and can run up to 3 days before recharging. The IP67-rated wearable uses green, red, and shortwave infrared LEDs coupled with multiband sensors to detect more than 30 wavelengths of light. Biomarkers sensed include hydration, temperature, heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen saturation. These categories can be expanded through software updates from Bluetooth connected smartphones.

Rockley Photonics Begins Sampling Bioptx™ Biosensing Band and Platform

OXFORD, England, and IRVINE and PASADENA, Calif. December 5, 2023. Rockley Photonics has announced the sampling of the complete Bioptx™ Biosensing Band and Platform to strategic customers and partners.

The BioptxTM Biosensing Band incorporates Rockley’s breakthrough short-wave infrared (SWIR) biosensing technology based on their proprietary photonic integrated circuit (PIC) chipset. By incorporating the SWIR spectrophotometer into a wearable capable of several days of measurement, Rockley has demonstrated continuous collection of spectral data which provides unique insights into tissue composition and dynamics.

The platform delivers real-time streaming of the SWIR-based biomarkers of body temperature and hydration, alongside the LED-based photoplethysmography () biomarkers of heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen saturation. Combined with the recently released Rockley Developer API, the platform creates a seamless solution for real-time monitoring of vital physiologic parameters.

Dr. Stavros Kavouras, a Professor of Nutrition at the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University and founding director of the Hydration Science Lab, which studies how water intake impacts health and performance, commented on the novel hydration biomarker that Rockley Photonics is developing. “Hydration is an underutilized biomarker that is critical for monitoring of both acute dehydration, such as in athletes, and chronic dehydration or under-hydration affecting metabolic, cognitive, cardiovascular, and renal health.
