Freezing weather across the country has triggered the government's Cold Weather Payment scheme - after England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were hit by snowfall.

You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over 7 consecutive days. You’ll get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November 2023 and 31 March 2024, the DWP says.

The money is usually paid automatically by the Department for Work and Pensions to those eligible within 14 working days. To be eligible for a £25 payment, you will need to be claiming one of several DWP benefits, the government explains on its website online.
