Another weather warning for ice has been issued as cold snap bites back

Just when we thought the early December cold snap was drawing to a close – the Met Office has issued another weather warning for chilly conditions.

The yellow ice warning comes into effect at 3pm and lasts until 10am tomorrow, covering part of north-east England and a huge chunk of central Scotland.

Orkney and the Shetland Isles are also included in the latest alert.

Among the cities affected are Stirling and Perth, though the warning largely applies to Scotland’s less-populated non-coastal areas.

The Met Office says travel disruption may result from ‘icy patches’ on roads, pavements and cycle paths that are left untreated.

It also cautions that there may be ‘some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces’.

Meanwhile, much of Northern Ireland will be covered by a yellow warning for heavy rain between 7pm today and 4am on Thursday.

Again, forecasters highlight travel disruption as a likely consequence of the nasty weather, along with the possibility of some homes and businesses being flooded.

Tomorrow is when things will start to get serious for more of the country, with no fewer than eight yellow warnings for rain applying to different parts of the UK at different times of day.

They are dotted about from the tip of Cornwall to as far north as Aberdeen.

In England, 29 flood warnings and 116 flood alerts are in effect, while Scotland has five flood alerts and Wales has one.
