Cyclone Michaung Weakens Into Deep Depression, IMD Predicts Rainfall In Several States Today
Severe Cyclonic Storm Michaung has weakened into a deep depression and will further weaken into depression as it moves forward.
by ABP News Bureau · abp LiveCyclone Michaung has weakened into a deep depression and is about 100 km north-northwest of Bapatla, where it made landfall on Tuesday with windspeed reaching up to 110 kmph. The storm brought heavy rains in several states and led to the evacuation of people from coastal Andhra Pradesh and other vulnerable regions. Now, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that several states are likely to receive rainfall as an effect of the cyclonic storm.
According to the IMD bulletin, the system is likely to bring isolated heavy rainfall over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday (December 6). Heavy rainfall is also likely in Telangana, and isolated heavy rainfall over south Chhattisgarh, south Coastal, and adjoining south Interior Odisha on Dec 6.
In Chhattisgarh, light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall over the southern part of the state is likely on Dec 6,7. Similarly, light to moderate rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely in the Vidarbha region in Maharashtra.
As per a report in HT, Koraput (in Odisha) Collector Abdaal Akhtar said, "At present, the situation is normal. There has been a prediction of an increase in the intensity of the downpour in the next 24 hours, and necessary precautionary measures have been taken by the administration to avoid any untoward incident."
The cyclone disrupted normal life in Chennai by pounding the city with heavy rains leading to a flash flood-like situation. The Tamil Nadu government has sought Central assistance of Rs 5,000 crore to rebuild the infrastructure destroyed by the impact of the cyclonic storm.
Indian Air Force also conducted an aerial survey of affected areas in Tamil Nadu, reported PTI.
According to an official statement of the Greater Chennai Police, as of Dec 6, "six deaths were reported in Greater Chennai Police Limit, in view of Michaung Cyclone."
