Shane MacGowan's funeral procession route revealed as thousands set to line Dublin streets

The route for Shane MacGowan’s funeral procession through Dublin has been confirmed.

The Pogues singer’s funeral will take place in Tipperary on Friday, December 8, but his coffin will be taken through the streets of Dublin by horse-drawn carriage before the funeral Mass.

The mile-long procession will be led by the Artane Band and a lone piper and will take place between Ringsend and Pearse Street in the south inner city between 10.30am and 11.45am on Friday.

The hearse carrying Shane MacGowan's coffin will arrive at the carpark of the Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium in Ringsend, close to where Shane and his partner Victoria Mary Clarke resided, at 10.30am and the coffin will be transferred to a horse-drawn carriage, Buzz.ie reports.

The funeral procession will move along South Lotts Road, before it turns left onto Ringsend Road and across McMahon Bridge. It will then proceed down Pearse Street to the junction of Lombard Street East and Westland Row.

The funeral procession will then turn left onto Westland Row and head to Lincoln Place and turn right into Fenian Street and travel on to Denzille Lane, where the coffin will be transferred back into the hearse privately.

Thousands of fans are expected to line the streets for the procession which is expected to last about an hour and a quarter. A traffic management plan will be put in place by gardai.

The hearse and family cars will then depart for Nenagh in Co Tipperary where Shane's funeral will take place on Friday afternoon.

Shane's funeral Mass will be open to the public and is expected to be attended by President Michael D Higgins as well as leading figures from the music industry.

It will take place in St Mary of the Rosary Church on Friday afternoon, with the exact time to be confirmed later by his family.

MacGowan, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, after an illness, was 65 years-old.

Shane MacGowan's remains will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered on the Shannon, which inspired his famous song 'The Broad Majestic Shannon'.

The funeral arrangements are being made by JJ Ryan's undertakers, which is run by Shane's lifelong friend, Philly Ryan.
