Like all the instalments of the dystopian series, hand-to-hand combat is central to the plot. The young contestants, or tributes, are from various parts of the authoritarian world and are pitted against each other in battles to the death. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a prequel that takes place more than 60 years before the original film and focuses on the origin story of Coriolanus Snow (played by British actor Tom Blyth, who is currently in Calgary playing the titular role in the Billy the Kid western series). In this film, Snow is a teenager but will eventually turn into the tyrannical, scene-chomping President Snow, the chief antagonist of the series played in earlier films by Donald Sutherland.
