Following a successful first season on Netflix, Squid Game: The Challenge is coming back for another round. The reality game show is based on the South Korean 2021 series Squid Game — Netflix’s most popular show of all time.

“There was no red light in our decision to green-light season two of Squid Game: The Challenge, the most ambitious unscripted show we’ve premiered at Netflix,” said Brandon Riegg, Netflix vice president of nonfiction series, in a statement, according to Variety. “We’re so excited to continue the franchise of Squid Game with our team in Korea, and producers at Studio Lambert and The Garden for this epic competition series.”

In the first season of Squid Game: The Challenge, 456 participants compete against each other to win Netflix’s biggest reality TV cash reward of $4.56 million ($10,000 for every contestant). The show reproduced many elements from the survival drama, from the childlike games like Red Light, Green Light to the recognizable green tracksuits. Now down to three finalists Sam (player 016), Mai (player 287), and Phill (player 451), the winner of the massive cash prize will be revealed during the finale on Dec. 6 at 9 p.m. EST.

Squid Game: The Challenge has ranked as No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 English-language list for the past two weeks. It earned 20.5 million views in its debut week, followed by 11.4 million in its second. Casting for Season 2 of Squid Game: The Challenge has also started on SquidGameCasting.com.

When Season 2 returns, it’s unknown whether the show will address concerns brought up by previous contestants about the alleged difficult filming conditions. Several participants from Season 1 spoke with Variety about their experience. “It’s not like we signed up for ‘Survivor’ or ‘Naked and Afraid,’” one person said. “The conditions were absolutely inhumane and had nothing to do with the game.”

Additionally, two unnamed players are threatening to sue the streaming giant and the game show’s producers over claims they experienced hypothermia and nerve damage while shooting the show, according to Deadline. Express Solicitors said in a statement the contestants are seeking compensation for the alleged injuries suffered while filming “Red Light, Green Light” game in the U.K earlier this year. More recently, a contestant told EW that participants were so desperate for chapstick, some had to put lubricated condoms on their lips.

The original series Squid Game is Netflix’s most successful show, clocking in 1.65 billion view hours in the first 28 days since its premiere in September 2021. Squid Game has also been renewed for a second season.
