It is understood the incident happened at a music event at Vaults underground dance venue on Bute Street, where techno DJ and producer Azyr had been playing. Another event scheduled to take place at the venue on Saturday night was cancelled.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "South Wales Police is continuing to investigate the sudden and unexplained death of a 21-year-old woman who was taken ill at a music event in Butetown, Cardiff, during the early hours of Saturday morning. She has been formally identified as Olivia Spencer from Pentre, Rhondda." The force added that there are no suspicious circumstances, and a file is being prepared on behalf of HM Coroner.

Vaults is located in the basement of Portland House, a historic building which formerly hosted a bank, and primarily hosts techno, house and drum and bass events. The building was originally the Cardiff docks branch of the National Provincial Bank before later being run by NatWest. As of 2018 monthly music events were hosted in the venue and it received a permanent licence in the same year.

In a statement the club said: "As a venue, we are absolutely heartbroken due to the events of Friday night. During the event, concerns were raised for an individual who was immediately taken to the onsite medic for medical assistance. South Wales Ambulance Service arrived within minutes to the aid of our medic, but tragically the individual passed away despite every effort from the medical staff.

"We would like to send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individual and offer our continued support during this tragic time. Safety is our number one priority as a venue, and we will continue to implement our strict policies through our upcoming events."
