Israeli Police have reportedly arrested two men after they flew a drone device over Tel Aviv's Rabin Square dropping bags of Cannabis.

The news came after activists promised they would carry out the stunt near the site used for street protests and political rallies.

The Green Drone group, who seeks to legalise marijuana in Israel, had said on its Telegram web messaging channel, "the time has come."

In the midst of the incident, The group posted; "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's the Green Drone sending you free cannabis from the skies."

Police said they had suspected that the bags falling from the sky could have been filled with "a dangerous drug" but that photos issued later showed what appeared to be cannabis inside.

The Maariv news website said passers-by managed to grab some of the packets before police arrived.

More footage then emerged that showed people walking through traffic to pick them up.

Medical use of cannabis is legal in Israel while recreational use remains illegal.

An investigation was launched shortly after police made their arrests.

A police spokesperson said; "The distribution of a suspected narcotic substance is considered as trafficking a dangerous drug in all respects and the arrested suspects will be investigated accordingly."
