Trump demands Fox News to fire reporter who says she confirmed part of Atlantic story

President Trump called for a Fox News reporter to lose her job after she said she confirmed parts of a negative story about him.

The president called for Fox News to fire Jennifer Griffin over "this kind of reporting" on Friday night, hours after she said she confirmed parts of the Atlantic's story that Trump denigrated fallen or wounded soldiers while overseas in 2018. Trump also claimed that Griffin "never even called us for comment," and said that Fox News "is gone."

The Atlantic's report, written by the magazine's Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg, published Thursday and reliant on four anonymous sources, said Trump referred to fallen soldiers as "losers" and dead Marines as "suckers." The report also said that Trump, who has denied the reports, as have a number of administration officials, refused to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France because it was a place "filled with losers" and that he didn't want his hair to be ruined by rain.

Griffin, citing two former senior Trump administration officials, confirmed that Goldberg's report was true in regard to disparaging veterans and not wanting to visit the cemetery. While Griffin's reporting did not specifically confirm the "losers" and "suckers" comments, she reported that Trump said that anyone who fought in the Vietnam War was a "sucker," citing a former senior U.S. official. The "suckers" comment alleged in the Atlantic's report was in regard to U.S. Marines in World War I.

In the president's tweet calling for Griffin to lose her job, he linked to a Breitbart story about how she failed to confirm "the most salacious" part of the Atlantic's report.

While Fox News has not publicly commented on the president's call for Griffin's job, and did not immediately return a request for comment, some have personally shared their support for her.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier called Griffin "a great reporter and a total class act," while Jerusalem-based correspondent Trey Yingst said, "She embodies what the industry is built upon. Truth and accountability." Bryan Llenas, a national correspondent for the network, added, "Jennifer Griffin is the kind of reporter we all strive to be like. She’s courageous, smart, ethical, fair, and a class act. She’s earned the trust of viewers throughout a distinguished career and is [credible]."
