A Russian military officer ordered soldiers under his command to be “tied to a tree overnight” as punishment for refusing to fight on the front line, human rights activists say.

Soldiers serving in a motorized rifle battalion in the Russia-controlled region of Donetsk in Ukraine were put to “torture by cold and rain,” activists with the Movement of Conscientious Objectors (MCO), a non-profit organization that aids those refusing conscription wrote on Telegram on Dec. 1.
