Man caught stealing from vehicles in Oak Bay arrested twice in one week: police
· CHEKCredit cards and wallets have been returned to their rightful owners after being allegedly stolen by a man who raided unlocked vehicles in Oak Bay.
The thefts, which led to the man’s arrest, happened just days after the same man was arrested for possession of stolen property, according to Oak Bay Police.
It was on Monday, Nov. 27, around 3:10 p.m., when Oak Bay police officers received a report of a car alarm going off in the 500–block of Oliver Street. Police say the witness who called them saw a man running from the scene.
Officers located a 24-year-old man in the area who matched the description given by the witness, who was an Oak Bay resident.
Then officers found a stolen wallet on the man, which contained a credit card that had been fraudulently used several times, police say.
“During the investigation, police located a wallet with identification belonging to a Saanich resident that reported their wallet had been stolen and their credit card had been used in several fraudulent transactions in October,” said Oak Bay police.
They say the man was also in possession of other items believed to have been stolen, including Ray-Ban sunglasses, coins and a knife.
Police say the man was arrested for possession of stolen property.
Then on Friday, Dec. 1, around 11:25 a.m., the same man allegedly stole items from unlocked vehicles in the 1700-block of Hampshire Road in Oak Bay.
Officers arrested him, and he was later released from custody with additional charges, on top of the possession of property obtained by crime charge from the Nov. 27 incident. This included breach of undertaking and possession of property obtained by crime.
“Credit cards and wallets belonging to nearby citizens were located upon arrest of (the) man and returned to the rightful owners,” added Oak Bay police.
